Peculiar Pleasures Illustration Exhibition

Peculiar Pleasures is an international exhibition of illustration and artwork that has been scheduled to coincide with the Illustration Research group’s forthcoming illustration symposium and features work by established illustrators from the UK alongside emerging creative talents from around the world.

Dates: 3 – 16 November 2010
Location: Milkwood Gallery, Lochaber Street, Cardiff, CF24 3LS

Private View: 3 November 2010, 6.00 – 9.00pm

For centuries humans have created imaginary and mythical beings in order to try and illustrate and explain the ineffable mysteries of our existence. With this in mind an open call was issued inviting artists to respond to a theme inspired by Jorges Luis Borges’ Book of Imaginary Beings. The artists selected to take part in the Peculiar Pleasures exhibition have abandoned logic and reason in order to find a way in which to illustrate the redolence of our existence whilst simultaneously rousing our senses.

Peculiar Pleasures will invite visitors to the Milkwood Gallery to join the artists in examining many facets of our culture and society, exploring both the physical world and those ethereal spaces that stand on the margins of our consciousness between the known and the unknown. Spectators will be presented with a range of work in both two and three dimensions, and in a variety of media, that will challenge their understanding of the world around us and ignite their imaginations

The exhibition will be opened on the evening of Wednesday the 3 November 2010 with a performance by the French artist Arianne Foks. Following successful performances in Paris and Berlin Arianne will be making the trip from Paris to Cardiff to perform her work ‘Now I Wanna Be Your Frog’.

The Peculiar Pleasures exhibition was conceived and curated by Spike Dennis in association with Milkwood Gallery, Cardiff.
